Kings Somborne Community Speedwatch
This is a team of volunteers supported by the Parish Council who monitor traffic and speed through the village.
King’s Somborne Community Speedwatch are a team of local volunteers that operates under the joint sponsorship of Hampshire Constabulary and King’s Somborne Parish Council. Established in 2016, we hold weekly monitoring sessions from 6 sites around the village that have been approved by the police.
Our objective is to reinforce awareness of the 30mph limit throughout the roads in the village, to locals and those passing though. We monitor traffic speeds at these sites using our speed sensor machine and log the details (registration, make, model, colour and speed) of all vehicles travelling in excess of 34 mph through King’s Somborne. This data is loaded onto the Hampshire Constabulary database, which automatically sends warning letters to vehicle owners. The database holds details of owners of vehicles previously caught speeding anywhere in the county of Hampshire and if reported a third time, they receive a police visit.
Our data proves that King’s Somborne has a speeding issue and we use our data to apply pressure on the traffic team at Hampshire Constabulary to send a Police monitoring van to help protect the community.
Experience shows us that many driver’s slow when they see our Hi-Viz jackets. However, others pass our speed sensor in excess of 34mph; this year to date, we have reported over 30 vehicles per one-hour session (or one vehicle every 2 minutes of operations)! The average speed of vehicles reported is just under 40mph and we recorded one vehicle travelling at 70mph in a 30mph limit!
We are always seeking new volunteers, to allow us to operate more frequently. Interested members of the community can contact Terry Heffernan, Speedwatch Co-ordinator at ksspeedwatch@gmail.com.
