Groundwater flooding in Kings Somborne and Little Somborne – Flood Alert Issue

Groundwater levels in Little and King’s Somborne are high and rising. In the last 3 weeks, 181mm of rainfall has been recorded at Broughton. This is double the monthly average and is in addition to an extremely wet November 2022. In the last week, the level has increased by 0.5m. From Friday (20/01/2023), we expect groundwater will begin to flood cellars in a small number of properties along Winchester Road, central King’s Somborne and in Little Somborne. Over the next 5 days, the weather remains dry, but the groundwater level will continue to increase until at least Saturday 21/01/2023 in response to the rainfall recorded on Monday morning (16/01/2023). Further unsettled weather is forecast in late January and into February. Levels are likely to remain high or could rise even higher in the coming weeks. We continue to monitor the forecast. If you use pumps to protect property, please ensure that they can operate. This message will be updated by 17:00 on Tuesday 24/01/2023.

If you do hear of any flooding impacts around the villages, it would be really useful for our knowledge to know about this.

Or if you have any questions or queries, please let me know.

Many thanks,

Tom Woods

King's Somborne Speedwatch

More volunteers are needed to join the local residents who try to ensure drivers passing through our village observe the speed limits.

The Parish Council have just bought a new easy to use "radar kit" for the team to check the speeds of vehicles. Those speeding cars/vans or trucks will be reported to Hampshire Police who then process the matter further. The Police also give basic familiarisation for new volunteers of how Speedwatch operates.

Now the weather is improving and daylight is longer local residents will be out every week somewhere in the village, morning/lunchtime or evening, to monitor traffic. The rota requires volunteers to be available for just an hour fortnight at the most, and we go out in groups of 3 or 4.

King’s Somborne Parish Neighbourhood Development Plan

Driven entirely by the views of the Parishioners. relevant legislation and guided by both the National Planning Policy Framework and the polices within Test Valley Borough’s Local Plan and a wealth of analysis of data provided by a number of bodies as well as commissioned work, King’s Somborne Parish Council working with others in the community have reached another key phase of the Neighbourhood Development Plan process.
